First of all, if you have a story to tell, tell it. People get real bored with folks that digress with a million side stories and often forget what your story was to begin with. Really good way to bore people. Don't try and monopolize a conversation and be a good listener. Wonderful conversations come up when you listen without planning your answer ahead of time. Be comfortable. If you have nothing to say don't look for something to say. Be quiet until you have something meaningful to say. Dont try to tell jokes, tell actual real time things that happened to you that are funny. There. The best I can answer and I always have fun at parties and usually make new friends.

The best thing to do is actually to LISTEN to other people and ask questions about what they're saying. No matter how funny you think your story is, if you talk for even a minute or two too long people will start to think you're desperate for attention! Listen attentively (make eye contract, nod your head, mimic the other person's body language) and ask intelligent questions in response to what is said. If you do have a funny story to share, don't try to hog the spotlight. Tell it once to a small group of people, don't repeat yourself and don't laugh at your own jokes unless other people are already laughing!

Notice little signs like:
-them nodding and smiling and looking at your mouth(that means they're not making attntion unless there head is slanted)
-The laughing only after you laugh
To be witty:
-make jokes based on what you know about the people
-don't talk a lot about one subject if no one is responding with more than 3 words

The best way for people to think you are great is not to be the one who talks the most, being a good listener works. Also never pretend to know something you know nothing about, better to say "I didn't know about that, tell me more"

Read this book: "How to win friends and influence people"
The basic trick is to first off be witty, it takes intellegence and a fair amount of basic knowledge about pop culture. And then you have to get people to talk about themselves.
