Hey, I am no fan of Kerry. Blast away, as far as I am concerned. But keep it true.
I have seen at least 20 comments about John Kerry putting down the troops in a recent speech. First, for most people with a poor education, the military offers one of the best solutions, IF they can pass the test. Once in, they are given specialized schooling to learn a trade. Given the nature of the military, most of these will become soldiers & end up in any war zone there is at the time.
That said, many of the best enlist from choice (my son & grandson) Nothing Kerry said contradicts any of this, and the statement, sadly, is true. The message is get a better education and expand your opportunities.
So many of you added to what was actually said. This is a favorite tactic of those whose position is shaky.
I've said my piece. Now, have at me.

The military places inductees into positions according to what their educational background is and what the military itself needs. A person without an education, or without some other skill to be used by the military, is typically trained for combat.

Kerry advised those kids, as you said, to stay in school or end up in combat. It wasn't a slur on the people who serve our country; it showed insight into the way the military runs from someone who has served. If we ever reenacted Selective Service again, Kerry would have been doing them a favor.

And, no, many do not understand what they are reading. Nor do they read the source materials.

Perhaps they are the ones who should have listened the hardest to what he said.

Your really not showing very much wisdom or knowledge. Are you aware that the U.S. Army Infantry has one of the highest IQs among most groups. As far as straight intelligence there is a higher percentage of college graduates in the military, especially the combat arms then there is in the United States. The military on the most is smarter than the general population. This once again shows how people react when less than 1% of the population has a divested interest in the fight for freedom.

After John Kerry's despicable antics during the Vietnam era, I refuse to have anything to do with the lying schmuck.

How can that man -- who declared, in prepared testimony while under oath in front of a Congressional Committee, that he had willingly committed war crimes -- continue to be re-elected to the Senate??? Why is he not languishing in some prison cell somewhere?

I've heard the statement from Kerry and I haven't seen anyone expanding it much. He said if you're smart you can go to school and get a good job and if you're not you can go to Iraq. It sure sounded like he said "soldiers aren't very smart".

Kerry...now that is a disaster walking around! Hell I'm an independent, not a fan of Bush's strategy, but Kerry, a walking ketchup bottle!

But please share with us a reference on one of Kerry's speeches in reference to our soldiers!
