Even though in the past they've always been healthy? In the beginning of August (this year), my daughter had tonsillitis. She took antibiotics and it cleared up in a couple of weeks. In the beginning of September, she had a high fever for two days (with no other symptoms), but then that cleared. Then, in the beginning of October, she had an upper respiratory infection. She took antibiotics for 5 days. Her fever was gone by the 2nd day with antibiotics, but she still had a runny nose which lasted 2 1/2 weeks. I thought it might be allergies, so I talked to a pharmacist and she suggested giving her Dimatapp Elixir. That seemed to clear her runny nose after taking it for 2 days. Well, NOW today, she has a low fever, but no other symptoms. I'm hoping it will run its course, but I'm also worried about what is causing her to have a fever at least once a month all of a sudden. Of course, if her fever persists, I will take her to a doctor and ask him about this.

Just to let everyone know: When she had a runny nose for 2 1/2 weeks, she did not have a fever at that time (she did before that), so I know that with allergies you don't get a fever. Also, she's usually pretty good about not putting things in her mouth. AND, I don't allow people to smoke around her (but do they when I'm not there?.... I better check to be sure....... they better not be).
Thanks everyone!

Actually, yes it is. If your child is teething, fevers are extremely common to go along with it. Kids catch everything. A good thing for you to know is that your child is also building up antibodies every time she is sick. Runny noses also go along with teething.
Toddlers also have their hands in everything. My baby (he's now one) seems like he is sick with something every month, no joke. He's been on antibiotics about 5 times already and was on Nystantin for 5 months for some oral thrush. He is very healthy. Toddlers just pick up everything off the floor, tons of people coo over them, and their little systems just make them more suseptible. My husband was an aka "sickly" kid when he was little and now as an adult you WILL NEVER SEE HIM SICK, EVER! He only takes sick days for his kids, never him!
As others said, if your kid is in daycare expect them to be sick every three weeks (no joke). I took some Early Childhood Education classes and found out that babies/kids are sick on AVERAGE OF every ELEVEN DAYS! Meaning: a runny nose, a little cough, a stomach ache, SOMETHING! LOL I was shocked to hear that, but after two kids, I do believe it!
The first year (kindergarten) my daughter was in school, she brought home everything plus I worked at a middle school. I think I was sick one after another every other week! By first grade and my next year working at the school, we had both built up our immunities so well that we DIDN'T get sick at all!
You can rule out anything else with a regular well baby child check up. You can always ask for labs to be done. I did ask for my daughter to get her iron levels checked and things like that just for peace of mind. Thyroid checks, or things that run in your family can be done, but honestly it just sounds like a typical toddler! Good luck!

First let me say that in many states they have discontinued Dimetapp in children because of the effects on other functions in the body that happens. I believe heart problems was one of them. I used it on all my children like you my oldest is now 18 with no symptoms so, im not real sure of the validation of that. Check with your pediatrician they will know. Allergies are bad but they dont cause a fever. Talk to your pediatrician about having some test done to your child such as blood work. I dont want to scare you but sometimes just by checking a childs vitals doesnt always give us a underline of the cause of these problems. There maybe something that the doctor is missing in there diagnosis.

It is that time of year. When your doctor prescribes antibiotics do you give her all of them or do you stop giving them to her when she feels better? Its very important to take the full round of antibiotics. If you don't then the bacteria build up a resistance to the medicine. If she's not getting better you need to go back to the doctor. It could be allergies, but you don't usually run fever with allergies.

This is normal. At this age your daughter is putting everything in her mouth to test things. As we all know there are germs everywhere and toddlers seem to soak them all up. This will pass in time, you can remind her to keep things out of her mouth and ask her teachers to do the same. You should also make it a point for her to wash her hands when she comes home from school, after touching animals and before mealtimes. If you start a hand-washing routine she will want to stick with it even at school.

If your toddler is in a daycare, this is very normal. Kids in daycare tend to get sick frequently due to the number of germs carried by kids walking into a daycare at any time. It's usually worse right after starting a daycare for the first time, or for the first couple of months after returning from a summer vacation.

One of the biggest causes of illness in toddlers is ear infections. My son (27 months) had one every other month from birth until this past summer. he got one again in September, so the ENT doctor put tubes in his ears and he hasn't been sick since.
The tubes prevent build-up of liquid in the ear canal. If that liquid stays in there, it can cause infections to recur.

Sometimes when little ones are cutting teeth they come up with colds or flus
out of the blue.Maybe she is and just because you can't see any new teeth
doesn't mean they aren't starting to push down into the gums.

Yes , it is normal that a toddler gets sick. When my daughter was young she was at the doctors all the time with her sinuses and throat problems. He ask me if I smoked, my husband did. I stopped allowing smoking in the house she stopped getting sick all the time.

Yes because this is the age where they start trying to test everything to see if it is eatable, and they keep their hands on things.
