Spanish is associated with a group of people that is discriminated, for ethnicity and class reasons. People don't want to learn a language that is associated with a less-privileged group.

Alternately, people just don't see the reason to learn another language when their native language is the language of high status.

Sad but true! (I love speaking Spanish, by the way.)

English is the official language used in business. It is also the official language of the USA. I have no problem with others coming to live in this country and I have no problem with you speaking your first language at home and with friends, but you should learn english to get around here. If an american or other primarily english speaker were to move to Mexico then they would need to learn spanish to live as very little is written in 2 languages.

Not sure where you are from but here in the Midwest it is certainly not necessary to know Spanish. We do have good sized Hispanic population but it is not by anymeans the dominant race. Most people around here don"t speak any Spanish and I don"t see why we should.

If you want to live here in the good old USA you should learn how to speak English, if not go to the country in which you speak the language.

well, its obviously not needed then.
spanish speakers may be in the hundreds of millions, but it's not an important language of business/economics.
unless you own a business in the united states where you have large numbers of recent immigrant employees, why would you "need" to learn spanish?
its certainly advantageous, but most americans hve no real use for it at this point in time
