a female friend of mine let me know that i "needed a system" when it came to my closet... considering i'm a guy, i always put it on a hanger and stuck it where ever there was space. but if i am going to organize it, then i only want to do it once so i am here asking.. what is the best way to organize it?

I organize both by type of clothing as well as by whether it is work/formal or casual.

Once those sides are determined, I organize by shirts, pants and jackets. Once those are together, I organize by color. The point being when I wake up in the morning to try to figure out what I'm going to wear, I know where each thing is, even if I'm not yet awake.

Also, I have my shoes organized by whether they are formal or not, and as much as possible that I use a lot of top of the shoe rack, with what I do not use a lot in the bottom.

Also, it's worth investing in clothing and shoe protectors for things you don't use as much that are worth a lot. For me, some of my nice dresses and suits. You can buy great clear protectors to keep your suits in and even label them "tan summer suit" "gray winter suit" etc. This protects from dust... If you don't want to pay as much, keep the ones the dry cleaners put them in...

Just try to stay on top of whatever system you choose. Once it becomes routine, you won't even remember what the chaos was like before...

First, I would buy the shelf units that are easily installed - these are made from plastic coated metal (usually white), and can be designed to fit your specific closet. Next, I would purchase some basic containers for stuff like shoes or whatever. You will have to pull all of the stuff out of the closet, install the shelves, go through all of it finding a place for everything (maybe even trash a few things), and put containers, hangers, etc. back in some order. Invite your friend over and have her help you plan your moves. Good luck.

It really depends on what your clothes situation is, I have a walk-in closet, so I place a dresser or 2 in there for sweaters or whatever you desire, I also use 3 or 4 shelf book shelves for my shoes, this organizes them nicely.

i agree... let a woman do it because no matter what we do, they'll accuse us of screwing it up, especially if it's about fashion or organization :(
