Her is what my gf did. But, first....Guys must ask a girl out, it is acceptable for girls to invite a guy to take her out.
She met me for lunch at school and mentioned that she was going to a concert and would I be interested in going, which lead me to say, sure, then we talked about time, day, etc, etc, etc

instead of asking him out for a date, why don't you plan on going to the movies with your girlfriend and while you are talking with him, just mention that you are going to see this movie and why doesn't he come along, it will be fun. like this you get to know each other better and maybe he'll ask you out.

i would just start up by simple conversation. maybe bring up a upcoming movie that you want to see. my personal fav is asking to go to a horror movie. that way you can jump into his arms. i recommend Saw 3.
