get some WD40 and failing that.. (it wont fail)
drill holes so the round hole is a bit bigger.
but WD40 works everytime!! just make sure it doesnt fall right through

When I worked repairing furniture, we used square dowels glue and tapped into the drilled holes, no problem.

I don't know, but I'm guesing you could do it with duct tape. You can do anything with duct tape.
