The first Selective Service Act was signed in 1917, providing for a draft for World War I.

The next version was signed in 1940 as a preparation for WW2, but expired in 1947.

The current version was signed in 1973 (while I was in college).

It is not in effect at the moment but, you do have to register if you are 18 years or older. You can do this at your local post office or high school. They did have the draft in effect for Korea and Vietnam wars ( Police actions)
