This is a common failing amongst both men & women...
Some people always think the grass is greener on the other side.
Some people stay too long in a bad relationship...
The trick is to be able to judge correctly and act promptly...

The question isn't specific enough. If you dumped the guy, his interest level probably spiked (usually about doubling), and then he started looking at what he was doing to lower your interest in him. Sometime down the line and after his guilt subsides, he'll probably start to remember what it was you were doing to lower his interest.
If he dumped you, he's probably realizing how hard it is to replace you even though there was something "missing" in the relationship (respect, affection, attitude, etc).
Breaking up sucks, and people will stay too long in relationships that just aren't working because both partners have a lot of growing to do, and unfortunately... they can't do it together. It always hurts when your heart gets kicked to the curb or you have to kick someone else's loose.
The best thing to do is to recognize it early on while dating and don't try to settle. The longer you take
Also, develop good friendships (this gets harder as you get older, especially if you move around much) and learn to appreciate your freedom and develop your own interests so that you become a more interesting, well-rounded person.
And LET GO of that baggage! Life's way to short to carry around a lot of regrets or resentment. Learn from your mistakes and move on..
