Because we are Team America World Police
and the rest of the free world depended on us for protection from the USSR. and in exchange for protection those countries sold the US land on which to build Miltiary Bases. and now that the USSR has fallen (thank you Ronald Reagan). the countries still want the US to maintain those bases because they bring tons of money into their economies

The US is larger than most of the other countries- if the European Union were viewed as a whole they would be up there too. The US took some dreadful casualties on the D-Day beaches in WWII. When we have bases all over the world then any of them could be used as a jumping off point in the case of all out war. After the fall of the USSR from superpower status the US (right or wrong) took on the job of the worlds police force. Unfortunately Bush & company like to use that military presence to threaten people to comply with their own agenda.
We are not an empire- the imperialist statements that people make really aren't true- the US has no desire to call these countries our own or start populating them with Americans.

Because the US has been freely invited by other government, in the name of cooperation and international security, to agree to have bases. If the 'foreign' nations don't want it to occur, then the US would have to leave. The Philippines is a good example.

We are willing to spend the money to maintain peace in the world... I know Iraq isn't peaceful, neither is Afghanistan, but we are trying, and will bring stability to both regions with a little help from our friends. We are not war hungry people as others like to paint us, however we will do whatever is necessary to bring freedom and democracy to any that desire it.

we shouldn't beat around the bush, no pun intended, but its pure imperialism. i don't see a base in the middle of africa since there is nothing to gain from there or they have already stolen their natural resources. if it really wants to maintain the peace, where was it during the Bosnian genocide. US is an imperialistic nation that seeks the natural resources of others and in the process sells weapons to other as well.

Because the USA has liberated more invaded countries than any others and has conquered more evil countries than any other, and we are willing to spread liberty, democracy, freedom, and natural rights than others are.

Like DW said it stems from WWII and (I'll add) the Cold War in which a good portion of the world welcomed the security our troops brought.

Same reason as every country comes to America for help when disaster strikes.
