The effect of mechanical work on an object is to increase either or both its kinetic and potential energy and may also be accompanied by energy loss (such as heat).

Examples: mechanical work on an object means applying a force on the object over a distance. This can cause the object to accelerate (kinetic energy increase). This can cause an object (like a spring) to increase in length storing potential energy. Finally, if you pull metal strongly enough, it will plastically deform and heat is released in the process.
