I'm gonna steal a quote I just saw.

"ARM YOURSELF WITH KNOWLEDGE!"

Before you even test drive the car, do your research. Research the car specs, research invoice and MSRP, research it against other cars you like, do a search on that particular car's chat forums, ask the members of those forums for advice.

Then go in and test drive the car. It's just like clothes (but much more expensive), you might like how it looks but not like how it feels. If you're gonna drop the money on a new car, do everything in your power to be certain that you are going to get your money's worth.

When I went to buy my first new car I did test drive about 20 cars over the course of a weekend. At first I was like, "Yeah, ok, it's a car." But then I would notice things, like one car's brakes felt sticky, or another car has a really cruddy turning radius. One car felt like it had no power steering and litterally took both hands to turn at the stoplight. If you know what you are looking for and you know your preferences then a few test drives will help you narrow down your choices. You get a feel for how well/smoothly a car accellerates. Also with a stick shift, one of the cars had peddles that were so small, when I hit the brakes, I almost always hit the gas a the same time. Big safety issue. In another car, I could not push the clutch far enough unless my seat was right up against the steering wheel. Another big safety issue. Taking time to shop really does help.

Yes, a test drive is very important when buying a car. Do all of your research first, then when you have narrowed it down to a couple of different cars then go check them out and test drive them. That way you can see how it performs on the street, how comfortable it is, basically if you can live with driving it day in and day out. Buying a car is a big financial step, would you buy a house if you have never seen the inside of it?

Absolutely... I sell cars for a living, and I hate to sound like a smart-***, but look at it this way... You wouldn't buy a $20 pair of shoes without making sure they fit, so what sense does it make to buy a $20,000 car without trying it on for size, too?

Without getting too specific, the is even some variation between two identical cars with the same options and the same model year. Even if you drove a red one and decide to buy a blue one that's otherwise identical, drive it. Listen for squeaks and thumps... press every button and turn every knob... although a dealer will probably fix anything wrong, the feeling of pulling up into your driveway in a brand new car and finding something wrong is a real buzz-kill.

Test-drive is one the more important steps in buying a car. It'll help answer many of your questions... such as do you like the way it accelerates... does it handle adequately... is the seat comfortable.... are all the buttons and levers within easy reach.... is the visibility good... is it noisy.... does it brake well... etc.

I have had where I loved a car from afar but once I test-drove it I no longer liked it. Without a test drive I would've bought it, that's how much I liked it.

After doing your research on the cars you want to consider buying, definitely take them for a test drive. Compare the rides by taking them on the same routes. Go over bumps and pot holes, try the steering back and forth. Put the car through its paces and go for the one that feels right for you. Right in handling, dependability, reliability, safety and fuel economy.

Oh man. I think you need to take someone car shopping with you who knows what they are talking about.....for your sake PLEASE bring someone else. You are going to get SO screwed by the dealer!

How about comfort? Do you know if a vehicle is comfortable before you test drive it. Maybe you won't like the handeling, etc.

Bring someone with you.
