Most cruise ships won't let you on board without a passport. Most of them carry foreign registry, and you are considered on their soil once aboard.

You could always get a passport just in case. They are fairly cheap and can be obtained at most drugstores and post offices. Although, contrary to what other folks have posted, it isn't required that you have a passport, just as long as you have some form of photo id. I went on a cruise to Mexico last year and I don't have a passport. I took my driver's license, social security card, and birth certificate and they let me board. I would not use the address card from DMV.
