I use Confectioner's sugar and milk with a bit of either Lemon or Orange zest. Just cool and dip, don't forget a dab of Whipped Cream too, sprinkles or a little zest on top.
Footnote trick: Paring knife to the bottom half way in, piping bag, whipped cream, just a small squeeze.

I always assume the asker doesn't have some of the alternatives that are suggested - in other words, when you're out of frosting, I shouldn't assume that you have cream cheese or Cool Whip. If you had to go to the store for either one of those, you might as well just get more frosting.
Thinking of something that most households have on hand, I would suggest Peanut Butter for your cupcakes.

My favorite frosting is cream cheese frosting, which tastes good on anything (muffins, cakes, cookies...). Take one tub of cream cheese (plain or any sweet flavor), powdered sugar and softened, not melted, butter and mix them all together. You can add vanilla or other flavor if you want to, but only put a few drops. Too much liquid will make it runny. This cream cheese frosting tastes like the frosting that they put on the apple and cherry turnovers at Arby's.

An easy icing or frosting is to take a cup of powdered sugar, add a tiny amount (1/4 tsp.) of vanilla or lemon or lime juice, and a tiny amount drop by drop of cream or milk. Mix into a smooth consistency and PRESTO. Enjoy!

butter cream frosting...take a couple tlbs real butter, softened add a tsp vanilla and start adding powdered sugar and a tiny bit of milk. stir well. Keep adding more powdered sugar til the thickness is where you want it.

You can use Crisco or something like that in place of the butter, or do a combo of both, but the real butter is the best. You can add food coloring also.

In the bowl of a mixer, combine 1 box of powdered sugar,
some milk, a stick of softened butter,
a little vanilla extract and 1/4 cup cocoa powder.

Just let a stick of butter soften (you don't want it melted), or microwave it for like 5 seconds. Then mix it with a mixer or by hand until it's smooth, add powdered sugar, vanilla, and a little milk, mix until it's smooth again, keep adding powdered sugar until it's the right consistency. You can add food coloring too if you want it to be cute, but it will make the icing more runny so you might have to add more powdered sugar.
