Try reading one of these following authors for starters: John Keegan, Hans Delbruck, Martin van Creveld. A good starter would be "Face of Battle" by Keegan. Compendiums don't properly treat the subject of war in depth.

If you really want the "Biblical days to now" approach, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery writes a surprisingly readable primer called "A History of Warfare" finished shortly before his death.

Happy reading.

Anything by Barbara Tuchman, particularly "First Salute." She's a great writer, very engaging, and does a fantastic job of research.
