I agree with Tony C.... if your going 46" or smaller LCD is the way to go. Look for 1080p; this is the ultimate, even though there is no programing on the air for this yet.

If you plan to go 50" or larger choose Plasma. Because the screen is bigger, plasma will give you better quility picture becasuse only plasma will give you black, blacks (LCD can only give you dark grey) and only plasma can darken\lighten pixels instantly while LCD has a small delay.....

Also a Plasma "50 TV will weigh in at about 120lbs, and an LCD in that size might wieigh 75lbs....

I was pondering this question for 3 weeks now... I am buying the Philips 50" Plasma with Ambient light. It is about $2,799 and is loaded with AV imputs and screen sizeing options. On Amazon.com.

Finally, sony has a 52" LCD coming out in mid november, I would get this but it costs about $6,900.....

Comes down to how much you want ot spend, size and 726p or 1080p....... good luck.

Plasmas should be used if you do not have kids. We kids tend to leave things on and burning an image into a plasma is not fun. However if you play video games or are going to use this TV as a computer screen, go with an LCD. in my opinion, both are great, but i would stick to the LCD.

neither.

plasma screens, while having increadible picture quality..it does suffer from the "burn-in" when you leave a static image in the same location, the same as you'd get on a regular tube TV. plasma screes however do have a end of life and after 60,000 hours aren't usable anymore.

lcd screens also have thier drawbacks. they are limited by the fact they can't produce a true black because of the fact they work by polarizing light. you also have the issue of refresh rate of the LCD pixels themselves. once an LCD pixel is activated, it has to stay active for an entire cycle before it turns off. they've gotten this down to around 7ms for good expensive screens...but this is still much slower than a plasma pixel refresh or a phospher pixel in a CRT TV.

if you want to get the best TV for your money, get either a three-chip DLP unit or one of the newer single-chip DLP unit that has the LED's rather than the color wheels.

however, if you HAVE to choose between plasma or LCD...i'd personally go plasma even if i do have to replace it in 10 years or so. they have a much sharper picture than an LCD and can produce truer color with MUCh smoother motion.

1080p which was mentioned in an answer is the newest HD format to arrive, and while there is no programming on the air for it, there won't be. current HDTV broadcast standards call for 1080i as the max. 1080p would use entirely too much bandwidth, this format will be used on Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and nex-gen gaming consoles...however, there is the possibility that cable or satellite providers might offer content in 1080p, it won't be used for terrestial over-the-air HD programming.

I agree with previous posts, LCD would be your best bet. Screen burn would probably be your biggest problem with the plasma monitor. Those that don't know monitors well think plasma is better just because you hear about it more often. I've always gone with LCD and been happy. One of my favorites is a Norcent flat panel LCD. Not a really big name, but a very nice picture for a great cost. Check online at www.norcent.net for local dealers.

below 37" i would opt for lcd-over this then i would go for plasma. while it is correct as the other posters say that plasma does suffer from screenburn most of the latest models have some degree of anti-image sticking circuitry incorperated into their models so this annoying problem has become (with some care) negligable. i say below 37" because lcd has the better picture quality and plasma tv's do not do justice to themselves below this size while over 37" then plasma has the better quality picturewise (although lcd is fast catching up in these stakes). and please pay no attention to the popular myth involving plasma requiring "re-gassing" every few years-this simply is not the case.

i say you should go with the lcd. Plasma i heard leaves what is called a "ghost image". When you leave it on the same channel or you pause a movie on it...when you turn the tv off...you can still see an outline of that image and it messes up the picture. LCD is also more clear to me.

I got the LCD but it's more expensive, you know what, buy the plasma tv in costco, if it has burned images return it, the return policy for costco is up to 5 yrs. belive me they'll take it
