Most of my friends only date guys who have a nice car or something that can benefit them. Should you date guys just for material things, especially if you have nothing yourself.

No .. you should never date a guy because of what he has .. date him for the person he is ... money can buy any material things ... but it doesn't buy personality ... !
On the other hand .. when I was a single mom - I couldn't imagine dating a guy that makes little or no money at all .. I need somebody that has the ability to take care of himself and others ... responsible, has a job, has a way of transportation for me and my daughter ... somebody who can keep up with my life style - I work full-time and make an alright amount of money ... so I expect the same out of my man - if he makes more - that's only a bonus.

It's all in the biology. Women find men who are good providers attractive. Men that can protect them and provide them with their needs are most valued. In modern times, this equates to expensive cars, jewelry, etc.
In all species:
Females have a finite number of reproductive chances. They need to make the most out of every offspring, and ensure their survival. They are picky when it comes to choosing mates, because it is in their best interest to do so.
Males have a near infinite ability to reproduce. They can be less selective, but they still look for the best chance to carry on their genetics. This is why men are attracted you young women. Young females have a higher fecundity, or reproductive potential. Younger females also have a higher chance of becomming pregnant and bearing healthy children.
Humans are animals like any other, and are goverened by the same motivations. Women look for successful, powerful men who can provide and bring safety. Men look for healthy, attractive women who will bear healthy children.
Your friends date guys who drive nice cars because they have proven they can be providers.

You don't want to be a slut like your friends. Usually those guys know that the car and stuff they have will attract girls and get it for that very reason. They only want one thing and they get it. Stupid girls think that they are getting over on the guy because he has nice stuff, but he only wants one thing and 9 times out of 10 the sluts will give it to him.

I have never dated anyone who had anything, unfortunately. I have always held my own. Paid for my own schooling, bought my own car and house. Always been with guys that have no cash.... Sucks.
