I am wondering how you deal with this condition. Also I am curious how many people have it.

hi, i have suffered from i.b.s. for over forty years. it is an embarrassing disease to have. it makes life difficult as i never know when i will have to make a frantic dash to the washroom. you see, most people with i.b.s. are constipated, i have the opposite problem, severe diarrhea.
there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the attacks and they can go on for days.
one day i can eat anything i want and have no problems, the next day just cooking smells will set off an attack, or something as simple as a piece of dry toast will trigger an attack.
socially my life is very limited. we rarely go out to restaurants and only within a five minute drive of our home, we order in or pick up.
i never stop for a bite to eat while out shopping. if i am with someone who wants to then i have a cup of tea while they eat.
rarely do we go to anyone's home for a meal, we always have them come to our home.
life isn't pleasant! and the doctor's have no idea what causes it, or how to fix it. i have tried many meds and they work for a short time or not at all. one day put me on lomotil and left me on it for six years, i had no idea it was a narcotic and had a horrible time when i stopped takng it.
there are doctors doing studies, and trials, and we can only hope that they will be able to sort it out!
i find if i keep to a set schedule, ie meals, bed-time, and keep myself calm it does help some.
wheat, chocolate, dairy are all huge triggers that i try very hard to stay away from. sometimes this all helps, sometimes it doesn't............but perhaps one day they will figure it all out and find a cure!
the main thing is to stay positive, and try to keep your chin up!!!!!
good luck with yours!

I've had IBS since I was little. Over time you learn what to avoid. Ie. caffeine products, dairy (but I still refuse to give up my marble cheese...lol), and cut back on alcohol. There's loads of info on a general search on the internet. I also know that green veggies is a must in one's diet especially if you have IBS. There's natural minerals in veggies that will help greatly.

I've also started drinking 10 glasses of water a day, well most days I get 10...lol. Also, walking every day, or at the very least every 2nd day helps your body get rid of anything. Exercise is my great reliever of all. And then sometimes, my symptoms get too painful and I end up taking flaxseed oil or an exlax which I try to avoid both as I don't want my body to get used to them.
