A whale

2006-10-31 05:15:03 · answer #1 · answered by Nico Suave 2 · 0 0

A great fish, a huge fish: that is from about 8 versions of the Scriptures. The assumption is that it was a whale, but that would be only an assumption, based on the fish that we know to be able to swallow and hold in its belly a grown man.
Although a whale is a mammal, it could have been thought of as a fish to people of that time, then again, let's just figure, as the Bibles say, a great or huge fish.

17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

It is described as a "big fish." Some think it could have been a whale. Recently some fishermen caught a really big fish and cut it open and found a man (dead) inside. I have no problem believing the story of Jonah.

It was a creature appointed by God to 'deal with' Jonah's disobedience. The problem is not identifying this creature; it's our unwillingness to concede God's miraculous sovereignty over his creatures. Today miracle is taken to be synonymous with the non-historical, the non-real. But the Bible shows Jonah's ordeal and 3 days inside this creature, before being spewed out alive, was a type foreshadowing Jesus' death and resurrection. Of course, if you don't believe in one, you won't be able to believe in the other.

That theory isn't basically constrained to Christians. many people assume that a whale is a fish, and since the story occurs on the sea and the creature replaced into "great" this is concept by skill of many to have been a whale; and it mentioned that God "arranged" it so no harm replaced into meant to return to Jonah; in basic terms time to think again that Nineveh may well be a effective place to circulate to regardless of each little thing. the main properly known character interior the account replaced into no longer the fish, yet Jonah and his reaction to the want of God. regardless of if every person believes it or no longer is in basic terms no longer between the questions asked while they stand until now God on the Judgment. One reason people have hassle with the bible is as a results of the fact of their purpose in examining it.

A large fish.

It may not have been a whale like many suggest. But then again it could have been. It is not certain what kind of fish. The bible states A big fish.

Therefore we should believe, because it is the truth. God Rules!
