Why is it that marijuana is referred to as slang for "weed"? Is it a type of plant or flower?

Actually, "weed" is slang for marijuana. Not other way around.

Marijuana is a flowering plant, and it's kind of a weed, so there you go. It's also called "grass," even though it doesn't look all that much like grass, if you ask me. Or "Bud," because the buds are where you get the part that you smoke.

because the plant looks like a weed so when early hippies started cultivating it to smoke, people accused them of smoking weeds....
