The first thing to clear up is that there is no "better person". While not verbatim, the bible states that we are all filthy rags that fall short of the glory of god. Regardless of what image someone portrays, were all in the same bucket.
As for fear of god, it's kind of like the whole parent - child thing. A healthy respect for his capabilities is a little more discriptive. It's laid out pretty clear how a christian should conduct themselves and what consequences are. You can seek some guidance on the issue from clergy, but in the end it's best to research scripture and make your own decision. There's a lot of stray and mislead people out there pushing some scary "christianity". The bible, prayer, and a lot of study time are the only way to come to a personal understanding.

Those some people are of course God-fearing.
This mean they want you to fear god too. Why ? Because they are God fearing and to fear God, they believe you will stop sinning and the world will be washed away from all the filths.
Does that mean we are to fear God? - From when you do what others want you to do?

There is a healthy and negative fear. Bad fear is that someone's walking behind you and going to kill you, and you know it. Good fear is having respect for someone, such as your parents, because you know the consequences of your negative actions. That is the same way with God. It is a healthy fear. The Bible says, "It is a fearful thing to land into the hands of the living God." You fear God out of respect for him, not because he's evil, because he's not.

Fear = Respect.
God thinks you're a better person if you fear him, too.

No. I don't think acting good because you fear God is the intent in most religions... rather people should be good because they strive to be. If that makes sense?
