Sty's are an infection of the eye and are not very contaigious. They look like a pimple or bump on eyelid or inside of your eye and are pus filled. There are topical creams for this condition & they typically do the job... Unless pus won't come out and causes a larger infection. Then the sty may need lanced by eye doc.
Other types of eye infections can be HIGHLY contagious...like Pink Eye... & certain parasitic eye infections.

A sty and pink eye are not the same thing for chrissake.

A sty is generally (not always) caused by a blocked follicle. Kind of like an eye pimple. Bacteria gets trapped in the blocked follicle and creates a small bump. It's not very contagious, though you should avoid sharing mascara and other eye products.

Honestly i would say its an infection such as pink eye. a sty is normally a bump on the lining of the eye lid filled with oil or dirt and its annoying but shouldnt be painfull or cause large amounts of swelling. most infections are contagious especially if it is bacterial. since you have a small child and children can be very suseptable to infection and your not sure what it is i would recommend you see an opthalmolagist (eye dr) or even your normal family practitioner. since its thanksgiving you can go to an emergency clinic if you cant get an appointment soon.(jsut a heads up pink eye can come from changing a diaper, taking out the trash or not washing you hands well or even forgeting to wash your hands, so until you get checked out be sure to wash your hands as much as possible especially if you are touch things that could have bacteria such as e coli (found in meats and feces)) if your hands get dry you can use lotion but try not to touch your eye, if you cant get to a dr now use eye drops or warm water on a wash rag

Sty's are somewhat like a pimple in the eye. And no they are not contagious. My hubby just had 2 this year, and not one of our 3 kids nor I got one.

Very contagious - Please read

EYE INFECTIONS

WHAT IS IT?

Four natural "defenders" protect your eye: the eyelid, a thin lining called the conjunctiva, the cornea (a clear covering over the front of the eye), and tears. But sometimes bacteria, viruses, or a foreign substance get past these defenses, and your eye becomes infected. You may be able to treat the problem at home. But if the infection is serious, you'll need medical care right away to save your vision.

The three most common eye infections are conjunctivitis (or pink eye), marked by pus or watery discharge and crust on the eyelashes; sties, pimple like growths at the base of eyelashes; and blepharitis-red, scaly skin on the eyelids. None are serious diseases. But they may be painful and sometimes chronic, meaning you get them again and again for months or years.

You can prevent eye infections by keeping your hands clean and keeping them away from your eyes, and by not sharing washcloths. You can also avoid substances that make your eyes itch, water, or burn. If you already have an eye infection, you and your doctor can cure it and try to keep it from

Yes, I think it might be contagious and you shouldn't share a towel with anyone.

This is an old wife's tale, but it's worked for me before. Get a gold ring and rub it on the stye. Something in the metal takes it away.
