I really want this job. I have the experience required. My hair is about 3-4 inches long, and it still in the stage between twists and dreads. I take care of them and they are neat and not shabby or nasty looking. I wonder will this be a astrike against me. I am well spoken, have a good resume and I will dress accordingly. What do you think?

The job is for customer service rep in a call center. So its not like the clients will see me.

Your appearance says who you are. You may not wanted to be judged by how you look, but that's how it works. I would not hire you.

As someone who has given interviews I would say you are rolling the dice.

Is the job one in which you will be representing the company? You say that they are neat and not shabby or nasty looking, but do you feel (if you can step out of your shoes for a moment) that an executive or manager from that company will feel the same? Will they be comfortable with a customer tanding face to face with you with that look?

I am not saying it to be mean and feel people should dress or do their hair or have tattoo's or piercings however they wish. However if you are representing an organization sometimes a more "accepted professional" appearance is expected.

If you don't convey the appearance they want to convey then no matter how good your resume or how well you speak, you may not get the job.

Good luck on the interview!

I don't think it should really matter. If they judge you upon your hair, perhaps the job was not meant for you.

If anything, just dress to impress, and go over what it is you wish to say in the interview; explaining what it is you can offer the company as an individual. If your personality matches the atmosphere, and you are more than qualified for the position than I am sure you should be able to win them over, regardless of the style of your hair.

I think it all depends on the interviewer and the company policies. I wouldnt think there would be a problem since you said you are at least maintaining them.

If you do get the job I would ask the HR (human resources) dept. to see if they allow the dreads at all like after they are longer or whaterver. That way if it isnt acceptable past a certain length you dont grow them forever and then have to cut your hair.

some companies are really strict, I have read cases of people who got sacked after growing dreads. If you are really good and are unlikely to come into contact with clients then they may over look it, but I know that most companies where I live would not look favourably on that. Snobby I know, but they try to present "the correct corporate image" whatever that may be. I was forced to cut my hair, I have wild curls and they did not like it, I was told cut it or lose your job, I could not afford to lose my job.

Yes, appearance on an interview accounts for a lot. The prospective employer may think you may not be a good representative of their company....particularly if it is direct personal customer contact - no phone sales. If you're interviewing for a "behind the scenes" employee don't worry too much. Your feeling self-conscience will be seen by the interviewer.

Essentially you have asked a "My car won't start, why not?" question. More information is needed to give you any type of definitive answer. Generally speaking, yes, that's the whole purpose of a job interview, to meet and to judge applicants. will they notice everything? You bet they will. Will they hold anything against you? Sure. Will they say anything besides either "You're hired" or "Sorry"? Not likely.

I suggest wearing a hat similar to the one on your avatar, and then you won't have to worry.

My grandma says that at one time a woman would never be caught dead bare headed--they ALWAYS wore hats outside.

If you get the job, you could always try changing your hats every day. Become known as "the hat girl". Alternate with turbans (which if done right can look very sexy). Keep them guessing. Then when you get beyond your probation period, you can always let your dreads hang out.

Honestly it will be. Really it depends on what kind of job you are getting. Like if it's an office job in a big firm yes...but if it's a laid back kind of office then it won't be a problem. Besides dreads are sexy but not for the business world.

I would never discriminate against a person's hairstyle if it was neat and clean - but anything can happen out there. Just go there and put out a great interview - good luck :)

I don't think it should be a big deal for a call center. (Althought it depends on who interviews you.) Who knows? Maybe it could work in your favor.

I would be really careful choosing what you wear - aim for something very professional to offset the hair.
