Espresso is a very strong and very short drink of concentrated coffee and is not designed to be drank with sugar. It is naturally bitter and contains a lot of tannins because it is so strong.
If you want a good strong coffee that's sweet, try having a latte coffee with a syrup and throw in an extra shot of espresso for good measure. It'll give the coffee some kick but won't taste bitter or overpowering.

Well, it's for people who like a strong, concentrated coffee taste, hence it is quite bitter compared with, say, capuccinno. Perhaps you should try an americano, which is, in effect, a larger straight coffee with a shot of espresso. You could always ask for a separate jug of hot water to weaken off your espresso! Or float some cold, thick cream on the top and sip the coffee through the cream... delicious!

Never use boiling water on coffee or it taste bitter.
Could Also be poor, old beans. Use freshly ground coffee everytime or once ground keep in a container in the fridge and use within 36 hours. Itallian coffee is best for espresso as it is not so oily.

espresso shouldn't be bitter. The taste is something that most people have to r eally like. Most likely the "bitterness" you are tasting is cheap coffee beans.
Best way to enjoy espresso: with cream sugar and a little bit of flavoring (your choice).
Hope this helps!

Hi
espresso can taste bitter, because it is very a strong and intense coffee. try a milder variety or try having a latte coffee its made with espresso and steamed milk, its very nice, it still gives you that coffee buzz if you need it.

Definitely cheap coffee beans. I really like espresso, but as with anything you get what you pay for.

I agree with Shelby, if you're tasting bitterness, then you're getting short changed on quality beans. It's supposed to be smooth, and very few places can actually do it correctly (in the US at least... in Europe, almost all of the places get it right).
