Because society has trained us to believe that we need men in our lives to make us whole. They are part of the "American Dream" that everybody buys into. You know, the mom, the dad, the two kids, house in the suburbs, the white picket fence....
And we grow up being subliminally taught that men rule the roost, so we automatically become "the weaker sex".
