I've had fibro many, many years. Here's what I know:
First--don't "live" with the pain or accept the doctor's casual "is it tolerable?" query, In the 21st century, there is NO reason anyone should have to "tolerate" or "live with" pain. that's what god made pharmacists for!
Exercise is the best way to keep symptoms lessened. Daily 30-40 mins aerobic. Hot showers & expecially baths will help, too. throw a couple handfuls of epson salts in your bath, that will draw out toxins & ease muscle tightness/pain. When it gets bad, don't be brave! Seek a doctor & get a pain prescription, you won't get addicted if you take them as prescribed. Pain meds work best if you take them BEFOR your pain gets real bad. Get a script for "trazadone" for sleep--fibro folks have sleep disruptions during deep sleep (when your brain replenishes the body's natural pain suppressing chemicals)--you may feel like you slept with one eye open, or have dreams that seem like a play with the acts out of order--or just "crazy" dreams., the traz will help with that. If the traz gives you fidgety feet/legs, take LESS than prescribed. Moderate your caffeine & alcohol intake, they both make the pain worse. Get massages if you can afford it--weekly is good--or have your honey squeeze your shoulders, etc. Oh, and get sunlight on your face (eyes actually) This keeps the seretonin levels up in the winter. E-mail for more--this is getting a tad long.

I have had it for 14 years. Fibromyalgia is a very painful disease that attacts the soft tissue of the body meaning muscles, tendons ect. It affect your sleep, concentration, you feel exausted all the time and most people with Fibromyalgia have Restless Leg Syndrome-you can't keep your legs still at night I can't describe the feeling. As for as treatment, my doc has me on Lorcet 10/650 mg. 4x daily ambien 10mg. to help me sleep and Flexeril 10 mg. to relax muscles at night.I also have to take Mirapex 1mg at night to help the restless leg.Even though i take all this med. i'm still in pain 24/7 but it helps me tolerate the pain. There is no cure. What helps one person may not another. Exercise and hot baths help soothe the pain also.

I agree with wackowoman. I have used several of her suggestions for years and they do work - massages (then drink lots of water afterwards to flush toxins), trazodone for sleep (also works for restless leg syndrome), exercise (yes, I know you don't feel like it), etc.
Everything she said is right on the money!
I can only add one thing, even though I don't FEEL like it, getting up early rather than sleeping in helps with my energy level. I figure I can always take a little nap in the afternoon if I really need it. My friend who also has fibromyalgia gave me this tip and it works.

This is a very painful illness - I hope you do not have it. There are various drugs available that are supposed to help, however they all have dangerous side effects. The best thing to do is to keep your muscles active and go for walks and stretch. A "pain management" program might be helpful as well to help you learn how to live with the pain.
If you suffer from this you have my condolences. My mother suffers from this and many other health problems. The best thing to do is do your best to tolerate the pain as much as possible without the drugs because the side effects of the medications can damage your liver or cause heart problems.
