This is a semi-serious question. Now I know that it doesn't take beliefs to walk around and take candy from strangers, but how do they justify the overtones of evil, spirits and so on?

It's all about the candy and parties and dressing up for fun.

Just for FUN.

Don't take it anymore seriously than that.

It's seen as a folk tradition. It's a cultural event. It's all about fun. The overtones of evil spirits are no more a deterrent to celebrating this if you are an atheist than they would be if you believed in good spirits.

I agree with the people above. I don't believe in Halloween or what Christians or any other religion believes it means. I just have fun and enjoy the decorating and dressing up part.

In fact, I used it up until my daughter was born as a reason to get completely trashed and dress up like some sort of half-naked character.

Now I use it as an excuse to buy cute outfits for my daughter and show her around, while collecting candy for us all!! :)

Evil is a judgment based on an existing morality. If you're working from a different moral perspective, Halloween isn't necessarily evil. I tend to think of Halloween as the balance for all the holidays on which we celebrate life, birth, rebirth, etc. Death is an intrinsic part of life, and by recognizing it and satirizing it, we remove some of its negative aspects.

Justify? I dont need to justify anything. Evil, spirits and so on are figments of the imagination. So, like all beleivers, I suspend reality for a day and play dress up. Whats the bnig deal with it? Why must I justify something. I suspend disbeleif for one day. Beats suspending disbeleif for a lifetime.

Halloween isn't a Christian festival about evil. It's an ancient Celtic harvest festival that's got nothing to do with religion

Because us Wiccans don't look down on Atheist or try to convert them, I think they feel much more comfortable with our traditions than those of Christianity.

I wouldn't say believe. What is there to believe in?

You dress up, you get drunk, then you beat up the trick or treating school kids on the way home and steal all their treats. They call the last bit 'Ghostbusting'.

Who you gonna call?

I believe that Halloween exists.

I've actually seen it celebrated in quite a few countries.

I've never seen any deities before though.
