Yes, I have heard that phrase. It means that a person is trying to get something to happen that will never happen.

Example: If Bob wants to move to Switzerland but his wife does not want to and he bugs her about it every day hoping she will change her mind. She might say ,"Bob you're beating a dead horse!"

I guess it is used because no matter how much you beat a dead horse, it is not going to move any faster.

As to the morbidity, I would rather see someone beating a dead horse than a live one. The phrase does not bother me much.

I've heard it; it refers to something that will never happen; long ago when horses were the primary mode of transportation it was sometimes necessary to pop the horse to get it to move faster; if the horse is dead it won't move and beating it won't help or change the situation

The Bible has had it right for millenniums. “A live dog is better off than a dead lion. For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.” (Ecclesiastes 9:4, 5) Does that mean there is absolutely no hope for the dead? Jesus Christ preach about resurrection to life on a restored paradise earth. His Jewish follower Martha, whose brother, Lazarus, had just died, believed in the resurrection, for she said of Lazarus: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” (John 11:24) To this, Jesus answered: “I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life; and everyone that is living and exercises faith in me will never die at all. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25, 26) Earlier, he had said: “Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.” John 5:28, 29; Luke 23:43. As you can see there will be a resurrection of both the righteous. and the unrighteous. Please do further research in you Bible to get a better understanding.

If the horse is dead, beating it will not make it get up and move.

If you are trying something and it doesn't work, and you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again, it will never work.

Otherwords, if something you do goes wrong, try a different appoach to solve the problem.

IT MEANS JUST WHAT IT SAYS SINCE THE HORSE CAN NO LONGER MOVE OR OBEY WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO TO BEAT IT IT MEANS THAT ACTION YOU ARE DOING OR WHATEVER YOU ARE THINKING OR PLANNING IS SENSELESS AND USELESS SO MIGHT AS WELL STOP AND FORGET ABOUT IT

it means continuing to make a point that's already been made, and no, I don't find it morbid. It makes the point.
