I saw a police man with a long lathi and a belt with number, and a name plate other police man having a belt with revolver some one having arm band with 1/2/3/4/5 strips. Some others with 1/2/3/ stars in their shoulders and a few ones with a crown, Indian tri lion tag or a blue ribbon in the collar

Constable: Grade name Ex A to Z
Head constable: According to grade: two or three chevron facing down
Trainee Sub inspector 1*
Subinspector: 2**
Inspector: 3***

All the above have a red & blue stripe at the end of star (shoulder end where arm starts)

3 *** DSP/AC ( Deputy Superintendent / Asst Commissioner
2 ** and coat of Arms (Ashoka emblem) SP / DC
Ashoka emblem only Addl SP

three *** in the shape of triangle with ashoka emblem at the top, DIG

two ** + askoka emblem + crossed sword = IG
one * + askoka emblem + Crossed sword = ADGP
ashoka emblem + Crossed sword = DGP

any more doubt.

Hither to basic level constables used to have just nickers
to run after and catch a thief comfortably
Now dogs do most of the job
so they are portrayed as buffoons in cinemas
and they also don't resist for this comic portrayal
***s are for identification of their roles and status in police heirarchy

U did not specify where u came across with this confusion.My experience------.
On the road the person stops u is a Sepoy.
Who asks about helmet or licence is a Havildar.
The person with challan book is a Sub-inspector.
U have no money & pleading mercy U are taken to a person ,.he is Inspector.Next DSP, SP,DIG & IG are in the office. VISIT.

there are various ways, like their caps, weapons, strips on their sleeves, stars on their shoulders etc.
