It just proved beyond a doubt that Jesus was the Messiah. This is confirmed by Matthew 27:54 which says, “So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!””

Many were resurrected when Jesus died (and only after Jesus' resurrection did these resurrected saints enter Jerusalem), pointing out that Christ is the resurrection: John 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies."

Yes, the King James Version is a better rendering of this account but yes, many righteous people were resurrected after Christ arose. He broke the bands of death and afterwords, others arose and appeared to many as a witness and testimony that the event was real. In the Book of Mormon the history is given that a similar event took place in the Americas after Christ's resurrection. Thus, we have the testimony of multiple sources that the resurrection is real and from that we can gain the knowledge that we will also be resurrected in the proper time.

Before Jesus' resurrection, the righteous dead went to a place called "Abraham's Bosom". Check it...

Luke 16:21-23 (New King James Version)

So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

And then, later on, Paul writes this...

Ephesians 4:8
Therefore He says: “ When He ascended on high,He led captivity captive,And gave gifts to men.”

These "resurrected saints" were part of the reason so many of the early Christians were willing to give their lives for the faith. If there were nothing truly tangible to believe in, would you give you life for it?
