Not all cats are capable of having silky fur but it is possible to help them have fur that's pleasant to touch. Regular grooming {brushing their fur} and a little olive oil or white fish every once in a while helps. Also most cats have nicer "winter" fur than they have in the summer. Petting your cats helps as well, the grease and sweat from our hands helps condition their fur. A diet of good crunchies{a.k.a. dry food-Iams}and plenty of water not only keeps them healthy but looking healthy as well.

The only way to fix this is by having a brain transplant with the cat. Your hair stay silky for a whole 10 years!

They do constantly clean their fur, but what really makes a lot of cats silky is good food, rich in oils, or oil added to their food (as mentioned by the other answerer.) I add a little flax oil to my dog's food, and she is super silky and shiny looking now...

I believe it is diet. I feed my cats a raw meat diet and they have soft, silky coats, do not cough up hairballs, and do not get mats.

One cat was recently changed from a kibble diet (quality food) to the raw meat and I noticed in two weeks that his coat was silkier. It had not been bad before and it just got softer.

When I first started that diet with my cats I was volunteering at the San Francisco shelter, handling and petting many cats. Their coats felt like wire brushes to me in comparison to the six guys I had at home.

I switched my cats food to Eagle Pack, and now I notice that their coats are very soft and silky. I believe it's what is in their diet.

It's both genetics and also their diet, if they're eating a healthy diet, which can be dry or wet cat food, it will effect their fur.
