The Bible does not reveal much about the origin of demons. The Book of Enoch, which is quoted in places within the Bible, gets into more detail. They are described as the disembodied spirits of the nephilim which were produced on the pre-flood earth, the offspring of the ungodly union of angels and women (Genesis 6:4). The Torah gives a clear translation - "It was then, and later too, that the Nephilim appeared on earth - when the divine beings cohabited with the daughters of men, who bore them offspring. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown." This is probably where the tale of the titans originated. Interesting how they are still around us in traffic.

Yes, I have seen them cast out of people. It will make a believer out of you to observe a deliverance.

What a demon is depends on what religion you are using as a reference. It was/is common practice to refer to someone Else's Gods and spirits as demons to keep ones followers from finding anything they might like about that other religion.

It is my belief that people can leave themselves open to outside influences such as disembodied souls and spirits not all of whom are bad. Voodoo, an African based religion has rituals where it is the intent of the practitioner to be "ridden" by a spirit.

Demons are an old idea for problems with your head.

Schizophrenia -> demons in your head
Paranoia -> demons in your head
Headache (ffs) -> demons in your head
Atheism -> demons in your head

I really don't get the whole thing of Jesus casting them into some pigs though. I reckon he just waved his hands about, slapped some sense into the person with paranoia and scared the pigs and people just went "Oh wow, he moved the demons from that bloke to those pigs!"

A demon is a rebel angel that sided with Satan when he rebelled against God rule.
They are referred to in Genesis 6:1 in one of their first acts of rebellion.
Yes, people can really, really, really be possessed by them.
Example: Mark 5:1-16 & Acts 16:16
Encounters with them usually leave one very scared!

Yes, anyone without the Holy spirit living within them can be possessed. one example:

Matt 8:

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two (people) possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? (EVEN DEMONS RECOGNIZE CHRIST)
30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

Demons are mentioned in the gospels. Jesus dispells demons from people and allows them to be set free into livestock. The animals are then driven into the sea.
