GREAT point! And do you know why? Because they share borders with these countries....
Switzerland is one of the most educated first world countries....It has never been in any wars.....We could learn alot from this country, it is a role model and a true democracy....

Having so many languages spoken is a great idea, I don't assume that it devides the country, but rather fosters polylingualism. The united states has always had one common factor - the english language. If spanish became another official language, it would be like the situation of French in Canada. The majority of Canadians do not speak french worth a damn, is this really considered an official language of Canada? Could Spanish ever really be an official language of USA?

Four for Switzerland. We have too many languages in the US to pick a second. In many regions the second language would be Polish or German, for example. In California alone people speak more than 100 languages (although the official language is English, go figure.)
I can't really get too excited about this aspect of the debate, to tell you the truth.

Well.. why not? Knowing a second language is like having a second soul, it is said. In India, the language/dialect changes every 15 kms.
In a random gathering of 10 people, chances are, there are 4 different languages are spoken in the group.. and Indians manage pretty well. The diversity is a challenge for toddler's intelligence, and develops his intellect. The more the merrier :-)

actually, there are four languages in Switzerland: Swiss-German, French, Italian, Rumantsch.
Anyway, the more languages you speak the better. You are more flexible, understand other people, can travel and do business all over the world. People: LEARN LANGUAGES, don't be afraid.

I'm pretty sure it wasnt anyones "idea".
"HEY! I know! We can speak a different language in all three cities!!! IT WILL BE SO COOL!"
Or maybe it was a secret plan to make the Switzerland more intelligent.

It is a good idea for a countries citizens to speak whatever and as many languages as they choose. If you are talking about official languages, the more you have, the more complicated and expensive it is to produce government written materials etc. There has to be a reason for official languages. Conquest always worked well for the British. Perhaps the U.S. should have English (American English) and Cherokee.

Based on our history and knowing that those who speak standard English earn the most and succeed most in life, English ought to be our official language.

Just tell me why my children should learn Spanish in school, when they are citizens of the country, and those who refuse to assimilate to my culture are not?
