Try putting aluminum foil on the counters, cat's don't like the sound or feel of it on their paws...also double-sided tape works good..Good Luck!

In our house most surfaces (chairs, sofas, desk, etc) are OK for our cats, but we did not want them on the kitchen counter or dining table. Each time they jumped on the counter we just placed them back on the floor and gave them a small piece of deli meat - they go nuts for roast beef. They never got any food on the counter.
It did not take long before they just stopped jumping onto the "forbidden" surfaces. And if they are looking for a handout while we are eating, the most they will do is jump onto a bar stool, but never the counter, and wait to be fed. But first they have to jump back down to the floor or they get nothing.
Sometimes the positive reinforcement method works better than a punishment.

I understand you completely. I have two kittens; they are 3 l/2 months old, and they are frisky and rambunctious and "naughty" but they don't know it, and jump all over the place everywhere. That is the nature of the cute kitties. There is really nothing you can do about it, except let them grow out of it. They wake me up in the morning, jumping on dresser tops, knocking over papers, lamps, they broke a clock radio for me. Yes, I have tried the water gun, but it really doesn't work. They may scatter fast out of the room when you squirt them, but 5 seconds later they are back doing the same thing. I think once you have your kitten neutered, it might calm down a bit, a least that's what I'm thinking about my 2. (Mine are females)
Enjoy your kittie! And give her lots of love, love, love.

I wish I knew the answer to your question. My kitten is almost six months old; my daughter had her for awhile when I was in the process of relocating. The kitten is a brat! Knocking stuff off, jumping around on everything. It's a real problem - if someone has the answer, let me know too.

If you're squirting him with a plain water bottle try adding a couple of drops of liquid garlic to it. You can get this from a health food store. It won't hurt your cat but he will hate it.

You could try putting him in a little kennel when he does this and say box or bad when you do it. Then after a few times he will realize he will be put up if he gets on things you don't want him to. Then when he goes to get on things just say box or bad and he will know not to get on whatever it is.
This is how I trained my animals. It was that our outside. They got use to knowing what words meant. I train animals to go to bed or to their room or outside. Just say the word when you do the duty. After awhile they will get the hang of it.
Good Luck~

My dad took a rolled up newspaper and swatted his own hand really hard with it. The noise would scare his cats down. Try a half and half vinegar and water spray instead of just water. Cats HATE vinegar!

Try something loud, like hitting a rolled up newspaper or magazine on the counter near him. You'll have to find something he really doesn't like.

In addition/instead of foil, you could try sticking double stick tape to the counters...it stays up and is really annoying to the kitties....
But, good luck, because they are probably too smart to be bend to our lowly-human wishes!
