I think if you are able to, you should live in a dorm for your first year. The benefit being that most people tend to form lasting relationships in college, mainly from their dorm room experiences, whether it's your neighbor, roommate, or what not. If you get an apartment your first year, you don't really get those kinds of relationships to watch movies with or really have a good opportunity to socialize with other students. At most, you'll see kids in classes but it'll be more of a superficial hello/goodbye type of thing. Also, a lot of undergrad classes have hundreds of students so the opportunity to meet people aren't all that great. In a dorm room setting, you are almost forced to go out together, explore areas together and then when you get old enough, drink together just because you pretty much share one big space. Also, if you think that you might not have a problem meeting students in your classes, the added bonus of the dorms is that there will be people from all different majors. Trust me, you don't want to spend your entire college life surrounded only by people who have the exact same interests. Like if I were a math major, I wouldn't want to be friends with only math majors because that limits your experiences with other people. If you're in a dorm, you have the potential to meet people with many different interests, like music majors, art majors, bio majors, etc. And when you start developing these relationships, you'll become friends with a variety of people, like future doctors, lawyers, musicians, artists, actresses, you know?? Good luck and I hope this helps. Let me tell you, because of these relationships I have friends who are lawyers, doctors, fashion industry folks and others.

From my own college experience, living in the dorms your freshman and sophomore years is an unforgettable experience. You meet and have fun with more people than any other time in your life. You cannot get this experience from just living in an apartment, even if you have a couple of roomates. After the sophomore year, I highly recommend living on your own, as dorms become somewhat of a constraint, but you will not regret living in them at least one year.

i would suggest living in the dorms your freshman year because college will be a new environment with so many new people and the dorms make the transition a lot easier...they provide resources to help you with all aspects of the college life.
the main reason i loved the dorms for my first year is because it is a great place to meet tons of new people and form your new friendships, my current roomates are all people i met while living in the dorms.
plus...the dorms are a fun place to pre-party on the weekends :)

Dorm is the better option. It will be cheaper. Plus, you will have the opportunity to experience dorm life. If you don't like it, then move off-campus to an apartment. At least then you will have tried it. ;-)

Students who live in dorms tend to have more friends than those who live off campus. Personally, I always enjoyed dorm life, even in graduate school.

i recommend a dorm especially in the beginning, because it's safer (a lot of schools are in seedy areas), you dont have to worry about added expenses such as groceries or furniture and you'll make more friends by not commuting

it totally depends on which college you are at. if a majority of the freshman live on campus i would recommend it.
but if freshman dorms are not very popular, it can be a stigma.
