I was under the understanding that they (the hotel ) could not kick you out... is this true?

Your contract with the hotel is for the length of the original booking. The hotel may enter into another contract for a longer stay but, obviously, they cannot if the room is already booked (contracted) with someone else.

I was under that impression as well. I'm thinking that if you're willing to pay for the extra night (s), then all should be well. The ONLY exception (that I can think of) to that rule could be in a situation where your room has been reserved by someone else. Say you booked the room for only 3 nights, and the hotel reserved the room for someone else starting the 4th day... I think (I have nothing to go on, just sort of guessing here) they might be able to ask you to leave... that's given they have no other accommodation available.

This is false. If your reservation runs out and the hotel is booked you have to hope someone cancels. The best action is to overbook your stay because you can ALWAYS leave early without penalty. You can try calling the corporate number and see if they have any rooms set aside for late bookings but usually the front desk has more control of that then they do. When I worked as a night auditor, i delivered check out notices. If, in the morning, someone came to me and asked if they could stay I had to look at availabilty (I also blocked rooms during the night for the next night to meet desires, needs, and requests) and determine if we had any rooms available. If we did, but the type of room they were in is no longer available, I told them that we had rooms but their room was already booked for the next night due to personal needs of a guest. It was rare, when we had availablity, that I had to refuse the stay in the same room though.
Even when we had a conference in town it had to be done. There were many times i had to ask conference attendees to move (don't get me wrong, we helped them move!) to accomodate another guest coming in (espeically the suites we had). We had an advantage though if we were full we could always decide to let someone stay and then put someone in one of our other two sister hotels at a reduced rate. This usually worked...there are always ways

Sadly, I think they can.... The hotel will honor the days you were booked. But if you decide to stay longer and the rooms are already sold then they can remove you. Its better to book for a longer stay and then give them notice if you decide to leave earlier.

no, its not true. The hotel can kick you out anytime, but it depends on the management. The best a hotel can do is look for another hotel for you, make the booking for you and if they have a shuttle service they can drve you there assuming you dont have a car.

You can extend your stay if another room is available. If they are booked you will have to leave. Otherwise, how would they take reservations and guarantee that your room will be available?

You cannot stay, first you didn't pay the extra days and second the new clients would like to sleep in a room and not in the street!
