katsulover, do you also try not to look foolish by expecting people in L.A. to know English instead of speaking to them in Spanish?

Um, yes?

Definitely yes on the second, but where the devil is Lugano?

In Geneve they speak German, though. Their choice, not ours.

I know where Berne and Geneve are, just not Lugano. Thanks.

Switzerland is minute and has chosen a 4 language culture for itself because of its unique circumstance. Their legendary neutrality is for the same reason. Their culture is uniquely Swiss, as a result.

Ours is different.

I am going to Japan next year on an extended business trip,I have been learning how to speak Japaneses as well as learning what I should and should not do in order to make my stay as pleasant as I can.Do I intend to live in Japan ,no but I wanted to impress and please my business partners with my attempt to learn their language.
If I were going there to live I would be trying even harder.I would be ready to understand their culture, and not appear foolish by expecting all of Japans citizens to accommodate me by speaking English,in their nation.

The fact most do not want to learn english is a spit in the face to every American who has had to learn english or already knows it.
