Are you talking about a professional, friend, family member? If they were not seeing me on a professional level, and were not qualified to make such a diagnosis, I'd pretty much ignore it, unless of course they were pointing out some very valid evidence to support their claim, in which case I'd take it to heart and see a professional.

Even if it was a professional, I'd want to see someone else about it as well before jumping on all sorts of medication. Bipolar disorder is a serious condition, but it's also sort of the 'flavor of the decade' in the behavioral health care world. There seems to be an almost cyclical fashion in which disorders become really popular, then fade into obscurity, replaced by other newer disorders. More than anything, its a measure of how complex behavioral/mental illnesses are.

Anyway, if it were me being diagnosed as bipolar I'd want to see at least one or two other qualified people before I fully accepted it.

Well, it wouldn't surprise me, as I am bipolar. Now, if they said that they were bipolar, I'd ask them if they had been diagnosed and what meds they took.

The usual answer is, "No, but well, aren't we all little bit bipolar, huh?" To which the answer is, "No. I'm bipolar, you're an asshole."

Bipolar is a very serious mental illness, and one that people think they understand and throw the term around lightly.

I would let them know that it did not change a thing between us, and would try to help them deal with it the best way I could. If anyone doesn't believe me, ask my wife who is very highly bi-polar, and was worried how I would react to her telling me this when we were dating.
