My female used to do this all the time as a kitten. It took some time but you can train your kitten to not do this. I have never tried the sticky tape but if I ever get another kitten I may try that it sounds like a good idea.

What I did with sugar was I made her a scratching post out of a 2x4 and 2 pieces of flat wood and some carpeting. I had the stuff laying around my garage. I covered the 2 pieces of flat wood with carpet by gluing it to the wood then I glued and wrapped a long piece around the 2x4.

Whenever Sugar tried to claw at the wall, I would pick her up saying no and move her to the scratching post. Over time I would just have to say "no sugar" in firm voice and she would go over to the scratching post. You have to be consistent and there will be times that she tries to scratch the wall when you are not looking, but my cat has stopped doing it and it is much more humane than spraying her with water. I think that just teaches your cat not to trust you.

Please whatever you do.....DO NOT DECLAW your cat!!!!! It is just downright mean and if it ever gets out it has no way to defend itself against predators. Even inside cats and can get outside. Plus you should look up how the surgery is done when they declaw a cat. Looks pretty painful to me and just senseless when alternative means can be used. Pet ownership is something that should not be taken lightly. It takes time to train a pet and lots of love and attention and some money for food and vet bills if the need arises.

Pet ownership is a privilege and should be treated as just that, it is not a right.

Jumping off my soap box, for now.

laurie is right do not declaw your cat. It is cruel. Cats are predators of nature. If you take their claws away. Its like taking all weapons away from humans. I have had two cats. Neither have a scratching problem, the one I have now loves to go outside and scratch on trees. I would advise you to monitor your cat and if he starts to scratch on your walls. If he does fimly hold it's paws and sternly tell it "no." This is a very simple method. If this doesn't work, I would buy a cheap scratching post and see what it does from there. It may ignore the scrath post but in time it might use it. If not, sorry, you have wasted about 5$ on that cheap scratch post. Continue method one or buy it a catnip ball, (cheap, soft balls purchased at pet stores. They are balls filled with catnip that can keep your cat playing for a long time) if it continues to scratch and ignore the post.- Lucas

tape some tinfoil to the place they are scratching after washing the walls with dilute laundry liquid. Then provide them with a scratch pole or pad and encourage them to use that instead. By far the cheapest car pad is to go to a carpet shop and ask them for some old samples. Lay one on the floor and buy some catnip spray from the petshop, give a couple of squirts on the sample section and the cats will use that instead of your walls. They like rough short pile carpet and hessian type carpet rather than soft long pile ones. You could even glue one to your wall in the place they are scratching and it will stop them damaging the wall or going elsewhere to scratch.

Depends on how much you need to do, or how much they scratch, but If they only do it in certain areas or there's not a lot of surface area, get masking tape and make an inside-out circle with it so it becomes double-sided and either stick it directly along the base of the wall or attach it to a piece of construction paper and scotch tape the paper on the wall. (Maybe just to eliminate the chance that any paint would ever come off with the tape.) So, the base of the wall will be sticky to the touch, and the cats won't touch it.

My cat loved to scratch the base of my couch and arm chairs, i added some tape to make it sticky and the cat didn't scratch them anymore.

Do not get them declawed. That is cruel beyond belief and it shouldn't be allowed. Provide them with a scratching post to use instead of your walls. The following site has top quality cat scratchers made from solid wood. I bought the "Pagoda" and my 4 cats are never off it!!!

If your cat is scratching stuff, try a scratch matt as well as a scratch post. cat nip works sometimes, but if all else fails, you can get a spray from most large pet stores, which deters them from being naughty in the same place. It works for toilet accidents, as well as scratching. If you don't want to buy it, make your own with citrus smells. Cats really don't like it, so it'll put a stop to misbehaviour.

I bought my kitty a scratching post I got it at Walmart for about 5 dollars. My kitty loves it she is always scratching on it. And she never scratches the walls or furniture any more.

BUY A POLE SCRATCHER FROM THE PET SHOP, OR BUY LOTS OF LITTLE BALLS AND STUFF THEY ARE SIMPLY BORED AND MISCHIEVIOUS, AND NEED SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH, CATS ARE NATURALLY DESTRUCTIVE AT TIMES (AS ARE DOGS) I INHERITED TWO CATS OFF A FRIEND THAT WAS GOING TI LIVE ABROAD AND IF THEY COULDN'T GET OUT OF A ROOM OR WANTED TO GO THEY SCRATCHED ALL THE CORNERS OF THE CARPETS, YOU HAVE TO BUY TOYS AND OR IF WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN PUT THE CAT OUT, THEY ARE NATURAL HUNTERS AND SURVIVORS, PERHAPS YOU COULD GET A BABY PLAY PEN AND FILL IT WITH TOYS AND A LITTER TRAY, THEY WONT BE ABLE TO MAKE A MESS OR DESTRUCT AND YOU WON'T HAVE ANY MESS TO CLEAN LATER, CAUGHT MY PUPPY WITH HIS TEETH IN THE WALPAPER CORNER THE OTHER DAY HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME!..... I SOMETIMES WONDER WHY WE BUY AND LOVE PETS, THEY CAN BE SO FRUSTRATING!!!!! BUY A BABY PLAY PEN UNTIL THEY CAN FREELY GO OUT AND PLAY, OH AND BY THE WAY I'M NOT AN EXPERT AT ALL, THATS JUST A THOUGHT, GOOD LUCK

The best thing to do is knit little kitten mittens for them, or alternatively take down the walls. You could tie string to the kittens paws with just enough free range to let them get close to the walls but not quite close enough, or alternatively you could get an evening class in cat languages and then tell them not to do it please..note be careful on this one as i have a colleague who tried this but unfortunatley neglected to note that his kittens were siamese and so they still didnt understand him.

Give them something to scratch & in some pet catalogs you can find wall protectors...Put catnip on the scratch posts...they are a lifesaver!
