For example, I love my mother, and have never feared her, but I did as she said (most of the time) but my father, who I was fearful of, I was openly defiant to. Isn't bowing to fear an act of cowardice?

You should fear Jesus because if you don't he will torture you in hell for eternity. If Jesus was some wimpy liberal who just loved everyone, there would be no hell and no reason to be a christian. But we know from the bible if you don't love Jesus he will torture you for eternity. Jesus still loves you but he also likes torture. It Is like you love your pet cat but that doesn't keep you from strangling it if it scratches you. Jesus is the same way.

For the unbeliever, the fear of God is to fear the judgment of God and eternal death, which is eternal separation from God. For the believer, the fear of God is something much different. The believer's fear is reverence of God. Hebrews 12:28-29 is a good description of this, "Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire." This reverence and awe is exactly what the fear of God means for Christians. This is the motivating factor for us to surrender to the Creator of the Universe for His service.

The original sense of the word "sublime" included a sense of fear and awe. Imagine coming upon the Grand Canyon for the first time, like an early pioneer. Fear, awe, wonder, and love, are not mutually exclusive emotions. One who loves nature should also fear it, in certain respects.

Believe me, you feared your mother, too.

Obedience out of love is a higher calling that obedience out of fear...however, the former can be cultivated from the latter, so therefore, obedience out of fear is a good place (and really the only place) to start.

the fear you should have for god is not the same as the fear that one would have for man but it is more like a deep respect. We should respect and love god and having this respect or fear as the bible says allows us to be obedient to him.

The fear you are writing about is not a servile fear where you coware in a corner somewhere. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is a healthy fear. A fear of the loss of Him through sin which allows you to not want offend Him.

Fear is necessary for obedience to God and we do love Him even though we fear Him. Fear is a form of respect. I do not think your parallel of cowardice is correct, It is not cowardly to fear, but is bold and brave to respect someone or something including God so much that you fear them. This type of fear is called submission. Submission is necessary to love, honor and obey.

Don't fear God like you feared your father. Not the same kind of fear. The love you have for your mother is the same "fear" or "awe" you should have for God.

I don't think fear is what God is asking for.Listening to His words do the same as listening to your parents. They tell you what you need to know to cope in the world as has God.Eventually the child chooses not to listen at some point and the responses to their choices bring consequences for those choices. When we do wrong our eyes are opened now and the situation no longer looks as it did before the consequences hit.As with Adam and Eve.Once they disobeyed their eyes were opened and they were no longer the same.

Who said fearing God was necessary. We are to have respect for God .The kind of fear you are speaking of is not what God wishes of us. If that were so then it would mean God is a liar and His word is untrue. ll Timothy1:7 clearly states " For God does not give us a spirit of fear ,but of love, power and a sound mind ". These are God's words and I believe them. God would never put something in us and then punish us for it and clearly state it wasn't from him. The devil is so clever and he will whisper anything in your ear he feels you will believe to turn you away from the truth. God bless you and I encourage you to seek God out and ask him to deliver you from this belief satan has put in your mind.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This is not fear that causes you to tremble and be afraid. This is the kind of fear that causes you to respect and be in awe just as you would be afraid to meet some great leader for the first time, and not know what to say. We are to respect God, recognizing His greatness and realize that in order to obey Him, we need to realize that He knows more than we do, that He has the answers and we do not. That He is God and we are man. You only need to be fearful of God when it comes time to face the result of your choices in life... did you repent? Are you sinful? Your sense of awe of God should help you to realize that you need Him, to forgive you and change you from the inside out.
