when my dad got shipped out (vietnam) we sent him out all kinds of pictures ect but the thing that he says really reminded him of home was that we would send him a half finished cookie candy/lolly pop so that we could " share it with him" he says that those pops were greatest because we brought him home for a few minutes everytime he got one.

well a few things I use to do with my friends kids when I babysat them was we would go on nature walks and collect things then we would get out the glue gun and paper don't forget the popsicle sticks very important here the kids would hand me the things they collected on the walk tell me where they wanted to glue them and we would make their parents a picture with the objest then add maganetic to the back or string works just as good and the parents loved them because they took time to make plus showed them what they did that day. Another thing I use to do was the kids and I would write a page each hour on the hour through out the day and tell them what was going on such as just took bath had lunch police car went by things that the parents couldn't see or know unless they were there this also was a big hit because it told them what the kids were doing and seeing. You can make a home video or freash cookies. A voice tape because they are not there to hear them laughing crying saying prayers or argueing over the toys or TV. The fine folks in the miltary are missing out on all these day to day things so I think I would try and bring home to them in some small way sucjh as pictures crayon pics are wonderful. With Christmas comming a family Video of all his old haunts would be great and messages from his old school teachers and friends would really brighten his days plus would give you two something to do besides worrying what is going on with him. You could start an online newspaper and give daily reports of the happenings in the neighborhood and with his home base. You could start a drive in his name for the Charties such as toys for tots at Christmas Coats for kids things like this to show him he is still a part of everything even when he is a million miles away. I wish you the best good luck. I hope this helped some

How about buying two small tape recorders/tapes. Have your son record messages for how his day went, things hes into now, how much he misses dad, etc. Also if he says his prayers before bed record it one night especially with him mentioning his dad in one. Send the other recorder and a few blank tapes to your husband so he can record messages for you and your son to receive. You could send pictures of him making funny faces, special places in your town/city that the two of them like to visit. Get a t-shirt made with his picture on it and put on the back of the shirt "I have the coolest DAD" or "#1 DAD". I'm sure you will think of something. Ask your son what types of things he would like to send (kids have crazy imaginations). Good luck.

Photo album scrap books (Keep copies for yourself cuz he might lose his) - kind of a running diary of the latest family events in pictures. Sudoku is becoming popular - a book of those puzzles is fun. If you live "on the economy" (not on post) - collect notes from neighbors that he's familiar with and likes. Small pictures that he can focus on and think of home...this might sound silly, but I had a picture of the grill and my favorite chair with "a cold beer waiting" for me that I loved looking at. A "how to" book or "Dummies" book of his latest interest. A John Kerry Dart board. Halloween candy For Christmas - Video of family Christmas with sound!!! want more ideas - write me I will find out whats currently the most popular thing going. I'm an education counselor serving soldiers in Iraq - .

Cut open and tape together (if necessary) a couple of brown paper bags (from the grocery store. Or it can be done with newsprint which you can probably get from an arts & crafts store). Have your son lay down and stretch out his arms the lenth of the paper. Trace out his arms and hands and cut them out. Let him color and decorate it. Now your husband has a "hug" from your son!

Have him draw family pictures, or pictures of your house or pets. How about grandmas and grandpas...or, draw a simple tree with leaves and have him sponge paint it and get out family photos to glue on it.

How about phone cards to call home? how about a subscription to your town's newspaper? How about an ipod followed up every week by an emailed audio file that he can download into it in which your kids tell him about everything they did that week?
