RELIGION!

a friend once told me something they think of when it comes to religion

for anyone who knows alot about different cultures and faiths.. apparently alot of them are very similiar with minor differences.
this is the theory:
dating back many many years ago.. there was one relgion practiced and beleived by all on earth and somehow, like a glass window it got shattered and the peices left strewn all over.
as years passed, people all over started picking up the peices and this is where different faiths came in.
this is said.. there was always meant to be one major religion, we just have them all spread out and confused.
im not saying this is what i beleive, i just want opinions from all..
all comments are welcome, however, please no purposely putting down any culture or telling me im totally wrong and dont know what im talking about.. if you disagree with this theory, just say so and why
this theory is not mine , so please dont say anything bad towards me
thank u

There is only one God. She has as many names as there are languages and cultures.

There is no one correct way.

All paths lead home.

Love and blessings Don

Pretty much agree although it will probably not be called religion, but Truth//We all have the spark within and we can all find our true Love within...

I know I am a member of the Christ Body and I am close to Home and I thank many religions for offering me a part of the puzzle.. I do all find them in the bible too--now,,,(the most common interpretations are not always the best and there is a lot more to it than I ever heard in church) Reading a little bit better/freer and praying for wisdom helps...

Love

PS If you are interested i reading more I wrote it in an answer to a question something like what you appreciate in other religions..

That is very similar to what actually happened. The Babylonian empire was begun at the time of the tower of Babel, and the languages were confused, and people spread out from there, taking their religious ideas with them.

Thus in Revelation, all the religions are lumped together as one huge false religious system, called Babylon the Great.

Only the one true religion will survive the destruction of Babylon the Great.

It's as likely a theory as the next one. Considering that all religions are based on the belief in power(s) greater than human. It's also possible that instead of all religions starting with one, it might be said that all religions are based on different cultures understanding of the same power(s). Therefor being similar because of a single sourse not just a single tradition.

I actually think that is a very insightful way to look at it, & if you think about the view God has way up there, it makes sense. Jesus only preached love & faith, that is all you must do to get into heaven. SO here we are with practically countless religions, & no real way to know which one is right (except of course the selfrighteous who would rather die than admit their religion is the wrong one) but to quote a comedy (Dogma) " No denomination has nailed it yet, cause they're all too self-righteous to realize it doesn't matter WHAT you have faith in, as long as you HAVE FAITH! Your hearts are in the right place ~ your brains just have to WAKE UP."
All we need is love, really. Everlasting, unconditional, "lay down my life for yours", true LOVE>peace sister. Have a lovely day:o]

The only reason why there are similarities is that all religions are created by humans and humans tend to have the same ways of understanding the world. Nature, weather, animals were important for survival, so stories to explain our lives arose around those concepts. We didn't understand, so we attributed it to something more powerful than us. It's just a similar reaction to not having the answers and/or being afraid.

All languages are fairly similar, all creation myths are fairly similar as well. There are just so many ways you can tell origin stories and humans share one thing, their humanity.

Most morality is universal, it is difficult to imagine a society that does not have some version of the Golden Rule. Having said all that there are some surprisingly strage beliefs out there but I'll let you discover them on your own.

I never heard this particular belief before. Using glass to explain religious diversity. Interesting because glass is man made, unless it is volcanic. There are many creation stories, it fascinates to hear how different people deal with there perception of reality...There are potentially, as many views as there are people on the planet. The idea that we all have to think the same way how much fun would that be?

Well, I think you are close, as far as the scattering goes, however, there were many religions from as early as Babylon, they worshipped many gods there. They were scattered because they were in defiance of the true God. At one time they spoke one language, but because of their defiance toward God, their language was also confused.

Genesis 11:1-9: " 1 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the *LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the *LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the *LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the *LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the *LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

God had told Adam and Eve to spread out into the whole earth, not to congregate in one place, but that is not what the people of that time were doing. Therefore they stood in defiance of God and he acted.

Genesis 1:28: "28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

*footnote: where you see the word the LORD in all capitols, Jehovah's name has been substituted for the title, LORD.
That means that Jehovah's name was taken out of the Scriptures and changed to a mere title.

So your theory is based on fact. However, a lot of the religions that were scattered were false religions to begin with, mixed in with some truth, but much paganism also. That is why there are some similar aspects to different religions. In ancient Babylon there were hundreds of different religions, many different gods were worshipped there.

Speaking in completely Biblical terms, yes. At one point all of man kind believed in God. Then they got arrogant in their unity and God decided to add some diversity to the mix creating numerous languages. This of course leads to varying cultures/religions//what have you.

However, in the end, there is one very common theme throughout all cultures world wide: religion. Period. Atheism, the denial of all religion, is historicly unnatural, only occuring in times of political upheaval such as the French and Communist Revolutions. Mankind is historically inclined to believe in something greater than himself - one single, original religion is one possible explanation for this.

I don't think that there was ever just one religion. Depending upon the area that the society lived in tended to decide what their religion was. So people would have gods of the sun and moon, summer and winter.
