I don't think most are obsessed, but hunting season is coming very soon and that may have something to do with it.

I think it goes back to the legend that American irregulars with guns defeated the British army and thereby won independence. The idea that a stockpile of small arms would do anything against a modern army is of course ridiculous (though perhaps I should qualify that - Iraq has shown that what America would really need to defeat an occupying force or domestic military dictatorship is a ton of roadside bombs and explosives, too bad THOSE are banned because they are "terroristic) but that is the mythology. On top of that, there is the history of cowboy movies. Seriously, that is a major factor. And the notion that America is all about the "great outdoors" which naturally implies shooting animals to appreciate that outdoors. If you watch Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine, he talks about this a bit but does not really answer the question. There is a neat little cartoon that relates the obsession with guns to slavery (and the ability of white farmers to control a numerically superior black slave population) so that may play a role as well.

I'm not obsessed with guns first they are referd to as fire arms and i think everyone should own one at least as well as learn the correct way to fire the weapon etc if someone was to kick in your door what are you going to do ?? call the police LOL what a joke as they proceed to rape your wife etc then my friend you will only wish you owned one they do make a good weapon for hunting also free meat on the table if you can get past the fact that you must dress or clean whatever it is you kill for dinner i think it cool worked for all our ancestors as well .on the other hand i can see your point about all these gun toting criminals i agree with you there but have no suggestions on how to prevent that

Most Americans are not obsessed with guns, but roughly 80 million own guns. Firearms in the United States of America are a Constitutional Right for self defense, hunting, and as a check on tyranny. The fact is that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are law abiding citizens without absolutely no intent to hurt, harm, or injure anyone, but they will defend themselves and their families if someone is intent on doing them harm. If you do not like firearms, that is your perogitive and you are more then entitled to your own opinion. However, it is not your right to trample on the rights of others because of your beliefs.

Say that again the next time you are assaulted by some thugs, and all that stand between you and anihilation is a policeman, or an armed citizen authorized to carry a weapon. People like you just can't get it through your head that a gun is inanimate, it is neither good, or bad. Why do you always shift the blame to the gun, instead of to the one who misuses the gun?

They are never used or displayed.

Guns are only a tool. They're a lethal weapon only when used that way, no different than a car or steak knife.
Why are liberals obsessed with hate and distortion?

Actually owning a gun is a right under our constitution and something to be proud of, since it is a right most nations do not give its citizens.
And this is a law enforcemnet board here, so police carry guns, so a gun question is perfectly good here.
And you have a right not to have a gun, but beleive me the bad guys all do.

I don't think *most* are obessed by guns. There are some of course...but not *most*.
Matter of fact, right after 9-11, my dad about flipped out cause he thought my military husband was going to be allowed to bring his weapon home. (they were live - and patrolling streets on post, etc).
Of course, he wasn't allowed to bring it home. I've always wanted to learn to shoot - mainly due to wanting to be an officer forever - unfortunately that probably won't happen now either....
my parents, my family - I don't think anyone of us has a weapon.
I have 4 boys - and wouldn't even dream of having a gun in my home. It's asking for trouble I think.
Plus - asking about it - does that mean the poster asking about molestation is obsessed by it? or that someone who got pulled over was obsessing about a search?
What country are you from? America does have the right to bear arms. In our Constitution you know.

No. I am an American. I own two guns:
a .357 magnum
an antique German Luger
I am not obsessed with guns and have several other weapons I would use first by choice -- an assegai (spear invented by Shaka Zulu), a ko budo bo, and particularly my two quite formidable fists.
However, this being said I am somewhat averse to bringing a stick to a gun fight.
