Dr.s recommend not giving a child under 12-18 months chocolate because it has caffeine in it, and their bodies have a hard time breaking it down. I was very strict on the whole no candy thing, but the very few times I allowed it I noticed my kids became almost mean. I asked their Dr. about it and he said it was probably the way their body's reacted to the sugar. He said a little more in moderation might get them use to it, so they don't act that way when they do get it. I still give it to them in moderation, but I don't think cutting them out completely is the right thing to do.

My son never had any chocolate or anything really sugary until his 1st birthday and that was his birthday cake. He didn't even eat much of it. After that we only let him have it occasionally. He is almost six years old now and as much as he loves candy and chocolate, he's just as happy with a piece of fruit. It's a matter of what is available to the kids. If it's not there, they can't be tempted.

Candy is an integral part of being a child. What age did you start eating candy. I had my first chocolate bar at the age of 2. Yum. If you want to keep them healthy, Chocolate is the best candy. Milk Chololate is the best Chocolate. Would you feed your child hot chocolate, I would. Better than Tea or Coffee and it makes drinking milk less boring for a child.

I think it is just silly to never allow children a little treat even chocolate after they are a year old. You still need to be careful about nuts and harder candies that are round but chocolate is easy. Not too much tho.
