get you some pony tail holders and a brush and play with it, till you find a style you like,, that is how most people do it, experimentation. messy buns are easy, brush it back like you are going to put it into a pony tail, except twist it up and then wrap it around starting at the base of your head until you run out of hair, then put a scunci or pony tail holder around it a couple times, it should hold and viola! a messy bun.

you can put wet hair in the quickest way you can bun it, it would become messier and wavier in the bun(make sure its a tight rubber band or elastic, though rubber bands damage hair)
you can also crimp it or put it in pigtails or a high ponytail thats been teased at the crown:)

although the textures of our hair are different,
you should consider wetting it
then use gel, to help control it
then pull it into a pony tail
twist the pony tail and wrap it around the rubber band.
then use another rubber band to hold it in place.
