That is the ultimate question asked by many people throughout the ages. According to the teachings I have learned and believe to be correct, we were all with God before this earth was formed. God held a council in heaven and presented His plan to His children. We were all there. He would create an earth upon which His children would dwell, to gain experience by exercising their agency in the mortal condition. We would live by faith, learning from the mistakes we make. Due to those mistakes, we would be unworthy to come back into His presence unless there was some kind of atonement made to cover our spiritual debt. Thus, a Savior was provided for that purpose. There was disagreement as to who would fill that purpose. Lucifer wanted to guarantee our safe return, not one soul would be lost. in return, He wanted God's glory. Jesus said simply that the Father's will would be followed and our agency preserved. Meaning that some of us would make mistakes and not be able to return to His presence. We would be rewarded according to our works, desires and efforts to correct our mistakes. If we are humble, diligent, penitent and faithful to His teachings to the end of mortality, then we will be welcomed back into our Father's presence, Christ's atonement being good to cover our spiritual debt. Lucifer rebelled when God chose Christ to be the Savior. Lucifer and his followers were cast out of heaven and sent to earth without bodies to provide the opposition in our lives forcing us to choose between good and evil. Ultimately, we will be judged according to what we choose to follow and obey. In the end, we will receive a just reward according to our mortal accomplishments. Those that faithfully followed Christ and the Father, will be accepted into what is known as the Celestial Kingdom, where God and Christ dwell. Those that were good but did not accept the responsibilities of serving God and helping our fellow beings, did not receive the ordinances and authority of God in this life, will be received into what is called the Terrestrial Kingdom where they may be visited by Christ. Those that were basically bad in this life, did not accept correction for their behavior will go to what is called the Telestial Kingdom where they may be visited by the Holy Ghost. There is one last location reserved for the truly wicked that knew the truth and had received the fullness of the Gospel and then turned their backs on it, becoming fully rebellious and wicked, fighting against God and His purposes, known as the Sons of Perdition. Theirs is a place called outer darkness.
In between mortality and this judgment of which I speak is a time for spiritual rest and waiting, prior to the resurrection. During this time, the spirits of the just go to a place called Paradise and the spirits of the unjust go to a place called Prison. The being a place of rest and the other being a place of repentance. Both will be places of learning to prepare for what is to come.
So back to the original question. We are here to gain experience, to learn the difference between right and wrong so that we may ultimately receive an eternal reward according to our thoughts and actions here in mortality. There will be an eternal judgment and all things will be made right. Even though mortality seems to be unjust and nonsensical, we can be comforted that God will make it right in the eternal sense of things. Keep that eternal perspective throughout your life and life will be much more manageable.
Sincerely, Rex

I once saw a woman interviewed on TV; she talked about a friend who was dying. As she sat at his bedside, he would slip in and out of consciousness, and the last time, he came awake with a look of complete peace, gazed at his friend and exclaimed, "I saw it! It's all about love!"

That is what I know...I have always known.

"The meaning of life is learning how to live it, even knowing it doesn't have a specific meaning". (Sorry, I don't remember who said this).
