Why on a telephone do the numbers go 1 2 3 on the top row of buttons, but on a calculator the top row of buttons the numbers are 7 8 9?

Is this a way of distinguishing between the two? If so, how many people have got confused and tried to make a phonecall on a calculator?

Any ideas on this?

good question, but somehow I have managed to not get confused when using a telephone and a calculator.

To distinguish between a calculator and a phone look for the tell tail sign of a receiver with little holes at either end, sound comes out of one and you speak in the other. Calculators don't have speaker holes. Also there is no + or - sign on a phone ( I know there is a * which mean multiply, so get get confused.).

Is this for real??, why would you get confused between the two unless you were blind, in which case there is a raised "pip" on the number 5 on a phone key pad which is the center of all the numbers so you can then locate all the numbers from there knowing that it is a standard layout with 123 at the top

...and is if that isnt confusing enough...my keyboard has numbers at the top all along, with the letter F in front of each number...isnt that rude? maybe the computer geek who designed it was having a bad day??! Still, how rude. Then, just beneath it, to confuse me more, is, wait for this, another long row of numbers, really didnt want to confuse you further, but i just had to tell the world what a messed up place we live in, and hopefully someone will do SOMETHING! oh my days! i'm getting stressed, i nearly fell off my chair seeing another square of numbers to my right, going round in a square kind of way. I give up, I think i'm going to go lie down as this is all too overwhelming.
