I don't know how someone would still be healthy from smoking and ill when they try to quit. His body must be used to the chemicals produced and his body does not function well with out them. He has luck on his side.

There is a whole range of experience. If you take any condition, and measured a thousand people, the results would range from "no effect" to "severe effect" with most people falling roughly in the middle. This is called a probability curve, and the science of statistics relies upon it.

In the case of pack-a-day smokers, the results follow the curve. A select few will see little or no harm, a few more will have minor problems, most will have moderate-to-serious health problems. A few will have major problems and another small group will be killed by te effects.

In a complex situation such and health effects of smoking, other factors can skew the results so a true "bell" curve is not achieved. Environmental toxins, heredity etc play a part.

Maybe Grandpa has a super-healthy diet, exercises tons and has super high quality DNA. There is no way to explain his particular case without doing a medical workup...

Well, we do know that lung cancer & heart disease can affect smokers, of which I am one. (Unfortunately)
But... my grandpap lived long life and was healthy, also... despite smoking from the age of like 10.
I would say that the reason for this anomily is due primarily to the fact of their predisposition (heredity issues) concerning lung/ heart conditions. The incident in their family may be lower or their generation was skipped possibly?
Also, we need to remember that in those older times, people smoked tobacco without filters (that add to the carcinogic level of the cigs) and many times they harvested and rolled their own smokes, and therefore did not smoke cigarettes where other harmful additives could be added to the cigarettes.
Just a few thoughts. I could be right or wrong. This has been a big debate for a long time... Esecially with smoking bans and anti-smoking campaigns..
Take care & I wish you friend's grandpap the best!

There are lots of people like that. Nothing new. Remember "most" people smoked in generations before you without dieing of lung cancer. If second hand smoke was so dangerous then how did anyone before us survive when people smoked everywhere?
Smoking is not good for you! But the evils of smoking are hyped way beyond reality.
Ask yourself why anti smoking groups never call for a total ban on smoking? If it was as bad as they say shouldn`t it be banned? I think so. The reason is because anti smoking groups make money off of it and if it was gone they would be out of business, no more paychecks. State governments also make millions off of it. The Federal government makes millions off of it too.
Why does Grandpa get ill when he quits? because he is addicted to nicotene. This is why it is so hard to quit, your body feels terrible when it doesn`t have it.

Maybe he has good genes. My dad smokes everyday since he was very young, now he's 71, and suffers from Emphysema. It goes away when he quits for a week.

All illness comes from the mind. If he's in a happy, healthy state of mind then he won't get sick. Learn from the elderly. You will notice the people that live a long, healthy life tend to take things in their stride, don't get stressed out, have a good outlook on life and usually a very good sense of humour.

well the logic answer for this is that many people who abuse drugs for a long time their body gets use to the chemical that they are putting in it.

for example when people who drink alot and it take them a long time to get drunk thier body need more of it to get the level of drunkness

its same with many drugs.

people who smoke pot and who have smoke it for a long time need to smoke more so they can get that same high ness
