a guy at work lays carpet as a side thing and will be doing my 12 x 17 living room, a small hallway and stairs with a 90 degree turn. The floor and stairs are prepped, carpet and pad are there . He will use his tools and is bringing tack strip he had left over. The place is out of town, I will help him and also buy his food. Any idea what I should pay or offer?

Carpet installation is usually priced by either the total square yardage or total sq feet. Your living room is 207 ft sq by itself, so you need to estimate the amount of carpet needed for the steps and the hallway. If the hallway is attached to the living room, the carpet used to do it should run the same direction as the room or the seam will be visible. Anyhow, depending on where you live carpet installation runs between $4-$6 per square yard, or $0.45-$0.67 a square foot. Most installers charge extra per step as well depending on how difficult they are, i.e. whether or not you have spindles or the edges of the carpet is folded over and tacked, called tailoring. I charge $5 for a normal step and $10 if they have spindles or are tailored. It will save him some time, and you some carpet, if you save the carpeting for any pie shaped steps in that 90 degree turn, also. Good luck, hope this helps.

I would pay approximately $150 - $200 in the Maryland area - if you are in the Midwest it would be more like $100 - $150.

If I were you I would find out how much the friend of a friend would charge first .............then go from there. The person doing the work sets the price.
