It is caused by putting your finger nails into your mouth and biting down so that pieces come off. Its appearance is so unattractive that it indicates a self-mutilating personality or complete lack of self confidence. It can be cured by keeping your fingers out of your mouth. I realize that takes some will power and some improvement in your self esteem. Look around at people who do not bite their nails and you will realize it is worth the effort and that many of them went past the same problem.

Onychophagy means biting and eating the nails. It is usually a nervous reaction to stress and the person needs psychotherapy. Sometimes the nails are eaten so much that stomach ache would occur.
